Subject: The Court held unanimously that there had beena violation of Article 2 (right to life) of the European Convention on Human Rights in that the French authorities had breached their obligation to protect Joselito Renolde’s right to life; and,a violation of Article 3 (prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment) of the Convention in that Joselito Renolde’s placement in a punishment cell had been inappropriate in view of his mental disorders.
